Mario Party 8 (Wii)
Although they love their sequels as much as any company, Nintendo aren’t usually ones to go in for yearly updates. The Mario Party series, developed by Bomberman creators Hudson, is their only example of the phenomena. As such, the series was always guaranteed to make an early appearance on the Wii - and with good reason too since its mix of board game antics and multiplayer mini-games are perfectly suited to the motion control of the Wii remote. Whereas some of the previous sequels have seemed a little unnecessary, this one actually feels like a brand new game. There are six new boards and fourteen different playable characters from amongst the usual Mushroom Kingdom pantheon. There’s also a new power-up system replacing the “orbs” of previous games with “candy”. These allow characters to transform into different forms to avoid traps and nobble other players, ranging from an airplane, to a bowling ball and a vampire.

Of course what’s most anticipated about the game is the 70 plus different mini-games, as usual ordered into 1 vs. 3, 2 vs. 2 and free-for-all games. These involve such activities as using the Wii remote to ride a water ski, tightrope walking, lassoing barrels, paddling a rowing boat with a partner, shooting on a target range and being the first to give your pet Chomp a wash. The games and presentation may all seem very cute but as ever the game is an expert at tempting you to cheat and conspire against your fellow players at every opportunity, making this the one family board game you won’t mind having an argument over.

Customer Review: I LOVE IT!
This game is practically the BEST multiplayer game for many reasons. Firstly, it is EASY to play for ANYONE of ANY AGE whether they have played video games before or not! Secondly, it takes out the COMPETITIVE side inside anyone who plays it, especially when there are 4 people playing. Thirdly, you cannot be that much “better” than others in this game as most mini games are decided on chance, and the final results depend on randomly chosen factors that you only know once the gameplay is over - meaning it really does not matter what strategy you opt for at the beginning! An example could be: it was how many times you “shopped for sweets” that counts instead of how many times you stepped on the green blocks… or how many coins you collected! What this means is that, ultimately, the SUSPENSE IS ENORMOUS because the results of the winner depend on factors that are revealed only at the very end! Finally, there are DIFFERENT BOARD GAMES! Yes! Unlike some of the previous MARIO PARTY games, this one enables you to enjoy different game plays where the objective of the game varies from buying hotels (similiar to the world’s best ever board game MONOPOLY) to finding BOO the GHOST in a haunted mansion to obtain stars! Nintendo has managed to pull out a CLASSIC game thanks to their focus on MULTIPLAYER GAMEPLAY instead of hardcore graphics! Overall, highly enjoyable and will go on and on and on!!!
Customer Review: Novelty soon wears out..
Its fun, it amuses my 4 year old, as many of the mini games are easy enough for him to play. Well animated, and there are lots and lots of mini games and challenges. BUT.. and this is a BIG BUT… the main structure of the game is essentialy a glorified 3D version of snakes and ladders, but you get to play mario, yoshi, etc as your playing piece. there is little or no skill involved in ‘winning’ the ‘game’ and getting stars - it all seems to be completely random, with so many twists and turns you cant really use any form of skill or strategy as anything you build up can be wiped out by an opponent in a flash. It’s got lots of animation for EVERY single thing, whilst fun for the first 10 minutes, this soon gets very tedious, and for the most common game layout it insist on having 4 players.. so if there are only 2 of you player, you get 2 computer players thrown in for good measure, this makes the game play even SLOWer.. I got the game out of the box today.. Im bored stupid already.. the kids will have fun.. but I really wouldnt recommend this for anyone over the age of about 10 - anyone over this age will easily complete the minigames and get bored silly in no time. OK to sum it.. the main game structure is seriously flawed.. after 30 mins it’s about as interesting as rolling a dice to have your next go in snakes and ladders. The mini games are fun, and varied, lots of different things to do, and great for 4-10 year olds… and unfortunately thats about it… not a great deal more to the game except variations of the same to make slightly different challenges. The price tag is WAY TOO HIGH for a game of this callibre - if you want to buy it then feel free.. but it I were you Id save your cash and wait for them to appear second hand in 2-3 weeks when everybody who got this for christmas will be desperate to get rid of it. Very short shelf life… just a way of milking money out of everyone who rushed out to buy a Wii just before christmas and then realised there is a limited choice of games and all the games are expensive…
