The active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports now spreads to your whole body thanks to Wii Fit and the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board, which comes bundled with it. The Wii Fit Balance Board
The primary tenet of Wii Fit is balance. Your centre of balance, the point between your left and right sides when you stand upright, has a lot to do with your health. Those without an even centre of balance will be unnaturally compensating for this imbalance, which causes their posture to become misaligned, increasing the possibility of putting unnecessary strain on their bodies. This is where the Wii Balance Board comes in.

Similar in appearance to a step aerobics board, the Wii Balance Board is much, much more. Easily capable of supporting weights up to a maximum of 300 pounds, it is sturdy and precise, able to measure weight and register pressure accurately when placed on a variety of flat surfaces. This advanced level of sensitivity allows for both the wide range of activities found in the Wii Fit software as well as the board’s amazing ability recognize individual players by their weight alone.

Getting Started: Create a Profile
Before you jump into doing exercises and activities, you’ll start by creating a profile. This is done easily and intuitively by simply choosing a Mii, entering your height and age information, and doing a few quick tests that will serve as a baseline for your new Wii fitness regimen. These tests are:

• BMI Check: BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is the standard used by agencies such as the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health. To check your BMI, you’ll enter your height then stand on the Wii Balance Board and let it read your weight.
• Wii Fit Age: After you’ve checked your BMI, you’ll do a basic balance test and find out your current Wii Fit Age. This basic balance test measures how well you can control your left and right balance. Based on the results, you’ll be assigned a Wii Fit Age.

Four Categories of Fun
Once you have created your profile it’s time to have some fun. Wii Fit features four main categories of exercises to choose from: Strength Training, Aerobics, Yoga and Balance Games. Wii Fit will guide you through the first three with the help of your own virtual personal trainer, while the balance games offer variety and fun to help keep you engaged and excited about your fitness goals. In addition, as you spend time exercising, you’ll earn Fit Credits that unlock additional exercises and activities within your favourite categories that will allow you to continue to push yourself. • Strength Training: Put your strength to the test with muscle-toning exercises like Single Leg Extension, Sideways Leg Lift, Arm and Leg Lift, Single-Arm Stand, Torso Twists, Rowing Squat, Single Leg Twist, Lunge, Push-Up and Side Plank, Jackknife, Plank and Triceps’ Extension. Challenges include Push-Up Challenge, Plank Challenge and Jackknife Challenge.
• Aerobics: Get your heart pumping with fun, interactive Aerobic exercises like Hula Hoop, Basic Step, Basic Run, Super Hula Hoop, Advanced Step, 2-P Run, Rhythm Boxing, Free Step and Free Run.
• Yoga: Work on your balance and flexibility with Yoga poses and activities like Deep Breathing, Half-Moon, Dance, Cobra, Bridge, Spinal Twist, Shoulder Stand, Warrior, Tree, Sun Salutation, Standing Knee, Palm Tree, Chair, Triangle and Downward-Facing Dog.
• Balance Games: Get into the action with fun, balanced-based games like Soccer Heading, Ski Slalom, Ski Jump, Table Tilt, Tightrope Walk, Balance Bubble, Penguin Slide, Snowboard Slalom and Lotus Focus.

Keep Track of Your Progress
Because keeping fit is an ongoing process, Wii Fit also tracks the activities you do the most and puts them into your Favourites category. With this information players can note exercises and activities that they are strong in, as well as others that may need to improve at. Some of the ways players can use this information for are to:

• Keep tabs on your daily progress with easy-to-understand graphs and charts. Using your personal profile, you can set goals, view a graph of your BMI results over time, see how many Fit Credits you’ve earned, check your Wii Fit Age and even enter exercise time you’ve done outside of Wii Fit. It’s all about coming back and exercising a little every day, and the personal profile makes tracking your daily progress simple and easy.
• Quickly check your Wii Fit Age and BMI without even putting the game in the console by going directly to the Wii Fit Channel.
• Allow up to eight family members can create their own profiles in Wii Fit. On the profile-selection screen, everyone in the family can see each other’s recent BMI progress and Fit Credit total. This will allow families to have a friendly competition to exercise and get fit.

This is a fantastic games idea that is really let down by the fact that it uses BMI to work out what fitness level you are at. This is not accurate on Children and it promptly told my 10 year old daughter that she was obese!! - Not the type of message that young impressionable girls (and boys for that matter) should be getting. (Just for the record, my daughter isn’t even slightly overweight for her height) It is a real shame that it has no way of changing the phrasing for people under a certain age, as after all the whole point of this game is to encourage people who need it to exercise. In my opinion it spoils what could be a fantastic game.

I too was a little disappointed that the vendor did not make it clear that it was imported from Japan and the US. Although they operate fine with each other, they do not appear to operate when interchanged with the original controller and nunchuk supplied with the wii.

Characters: More Than Just Mario and Friends
The lifeblood of the Super Smash Bros. series has always been the depth of the character line-up that each instalment has been able to bring and Brawl not only keeps with tradition, but does it one better. Just as in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros Melee, players can expect to pit their favourite Nintendo characters against each other in head-to-head and multiplayer battles, but instead of insisting on characters exclusively from the Nintendo universe, Brawl adds variety in the form of superstars Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake from Konami’s Metal Gear franchise. This is a first-time addition and one that will delight veteran players and newbies alike. But these two characters are only a sampling of the new additions to the game’s line-up. The other ten come from classic Nintendo titles and bring the complete line-up of playable characters to a whopping 25. See the full list on combatants below:

New Comers: Pit from the Kid Icarus series, Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Ike from the Fire Emblem series, Meta Knight and King Dedede from the Kirby series, Pok?mon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Lucas from the Earthbound/Mother series, Pikimin and Olimar from the Pikmin series and of course Sonic and Solid Snake.

The Rules of the Brawl
As in previous releases in the series, Brawl places players within a different, but easy to use fighting system. Players choose a character, select one of the numerous stages–which are levels based in the game worlds represented in Super Smash Bros.– and try to knock their opponents off the screen using a range of standard techniques and combos as well as a variety of special attacks and `Smash Moves’ specific to their chosen character. A Smash Move can only be performed after securing a `Smash Ball.’ These precious items, marked with the Smash Bros. logo, fall randomly and can be used by either player, but they must be cracked open before they can be used. To keep things interesting they can also can be stolen if not used right away, so when a player sees one it must be grabbed quickly and cracked to avoid an unfortunate turn of events.

Also, keeping with the game’s “E” rating and player’s affection for the characters, instead of displaying health bars the game uses a percent system to indicate character status and strength. The more damage done to a character, the higher the percentage and the farther back he/she is knocked back when struck by an opponent.

Many Ways to Play: Multiplayer and Single Player Options
Just as in previous instalments of Super Smash Bros. there is fun to be had whether you choose to fight in multiplayer or single player mode, but Brawl again pushes the envelope even further by providing additional ways to play within these areas and the possibility of others added later. Here are just a few of the modes that you can expect to see:

Multiplayer

• Standard Multiplayer Brawl - A standard battle between 2-4 players.
• Special Brawl - Take down your friends in matches which you can customize with as many rules as you would like.
• Tourney - Choose the number of players and rules you want and have at it in a round-robin battle against many foes.
• Online Multiplayer - For the first time play against registered friends or randomly selected opponents from anyplace in the world via a Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.

Single Player

• Training - Start on the path to Brawling like a pro as you learn to string standard moves together into combos.
• Classic - Fight your way through semi-randomly generated battles where each match features an arena or opponent from a particular game series and may feature unique battle conditions.
• Stadium: Target Smash - Practice your aim as you break ten targets within a set time limit.
• “Subspace Emissary” - The world of Smash Bros. is invaded by an entity called the Ancient Minister and his army, called “The Primid. As this villain starts turning characters into trophies to harness their power, declare a peace with your quarrelsome companions and work together to defeat the invaders in an engrossing side-scrolling adventure.

Stay in Control
Because the Super Smash Bros. series has a huge following and an even larger list of characters from the Nintendo catalogue, it only makes sense that players may have a preference for a particular Nintendo controller from the era of their favourite game. Because of this the game’s creators have incorporated all four of the major Nintendo controllers into the mix. Whether you prefer the Wii Remote, the Wii Remote with Nunchuck, the Wii Classic Controller or GameCube Controller it makes no difference. All four are fully compatible with all the features of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although the handling of each is a little different. Choose the one you are most comfortable with, or explore all your options. The choice is yours.

Finally, created with an eye towards providing year’s worth of fun, Brawl comes with extensive built-in customization possibilities. Dive into the game’s seemingly endless list of game modes/mini-games, battle stages, in-game items and musical playback options to make the game your own and Brawl the way you want to.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the best Wii game that I’ve ever played, and one of my favourite games ever!

For the Wii, the graphics are fantastic, if a little ‘glitchy’ at times, where a fist might enter a surface. Then, this is a common thing in all games and it doesn’t harm the game in any way. The soundtrack is incredible, one of the best in any game to date. What more is there to say? The presentation is fantastic!

The gameplay is an open issue. You can either hate it or love it, depending on which controller you use. The Nunchuck & Wiimote option is an ungodly abomination of mankind and should be avoided like the plague, the Wiimote on its side isn’t too bad, but it’s not too good either, the Classic Controller and the GameCude Controller options are definitely the best, as it’s less awkward to reach certain buttons on them. Moving onto the actual game. It’s a very different kind of fighting game, as instead of knocking them out, you have to send them flying out of the screen. It’s also unique as you can either charge in, brutally smacking your opponent(s) into the sky, or you can be a bit more tactical, and outsmart them. It’s the way you play it that can make all the difference. The only bad thing is during the story mode, it can be a bit hard to do the platforming parts with a Wiimote, but it’s not too bad. It’s also nice to see a game that DOES NOT USE THE WIIMOTE AS A STUPID GIMMICK FOR CASUAL GAMERS.

The story is weird. But I won’t go into depth. The only reason you’ll be playing it is to unlock all the characters, and there a lot of favourites there, including the fantastic Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid! Woohoo! The bosses are big and powerful, the usual Nintendo affair, and can be quite a challenge, which is a good thing since a lot of games are ridiculously easy in this console generation.

SSBB really excels in multiplayer. It just never stops being fun.

There’s just so much to do in SSBB, it’s so great! If you own a Wii and aren’t the type who only play the casual crap with “Wii” stamped on the cover, then this is a MUST-HAVE. If you don’t own a Wii, BUY ONE JUST TO PLAY THIS. ITS GREATNESS KNOWS NO BOUNDS. SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL FOR THE WII IS AMAZING!

Customer Review: An improvement, but certainly not a HD revolution for the Wii…
I’ve only recently got hold of a Wii, and for a little while I’ve been playing games using the bog standard component / scart adaptor cable that comes with it on my HD (up to 1080p) TV. I guess I’m at a disadvantage to begin with, because seemingly anything that’s not 720i/p or 1080i/p looks blurry and terrible on my TV (due to it being LCD). After getting hold of this cable I noticed a substantial difference. The cable itself is usefully long at two and a half metres and only requires a simple change in the Wii settings to output using 480p. On my TV, things are still a little blurry but overall it’s a much more comfortable and viable experience. I feel that I can actually properly play games on it now Although I didn’t expect it to, 480p mode with this cable is in no way comparable to 720i/p or 1080i/p on an Xbox 360 and so if anyone thinks this cable is the answer to their prayers on that one, forget it. It is however much better and clearer than an SCART cable, as I found out by comparing Resident Evil on a SCART-equipped GameCube to the same game on Wii with this cable. (However, this is possibly not a fair test depending on how GC compatibility works on Wii). In conclusion, if you’ve got an LCD TV that supports it, I’d heartily recommend it as it does make a difference. Just don’t hope for a monumental leap in quality

I plugged the cable into my tv put it on the component input and no sound or video came out. Maybe it is just a faulty product or perhaps my tv even though it does support component. Its a pioneer pdp-427xd if anybody knows anything.
